Be ready to leave
Be ready to leave
Why?
None of us knows when an emergency could strike. You might not have much time to gather your things (or your wits, for that matter!) That’s why it makes sense to prepare ahead of time and be ready to leave at a moment’s notice.
Keep shoes & flashlight near bed
If you need to evacuate at night and the power is out, a flashlight by your bed will come in mighty handy. Also, keep a sturdy pair of shoes near your bed. If there’s an earthquake, for example, your room may contain broken glass.
Keep your car ready to go
If you’re someone who likes to see how far you can get on your reserve tank of gas, it’s time to break that habit! Always have at least a half tank of gas. If you have an electrical vehicle (EV), keep it charged as much as possible.
And make sure you know how to open your garage door in the event of a power outage!

Do an evacuation drill
You wouldn’t perform in a concert or play in a game without a little practice. Likewise, it’s a good idea to have your family do an evacuation drill to iron out any kinks in your plan and make sure everyone knows what to do. Luckily, you don’t have to make everything up. The resources below have great tips on how to involve the whole family – and make it fun!
