Use Public Transportation

Use Public Transportation

Why?

Somewhere along the way, public transportation in the U.S. became the transit of last resort – at least for those who can easily afford to buy cars. It’s not like this in other countries and it doesn’t have to be that way here. Let’s use and advocate for public transit, so priorities and dollars don’t go elsewhere, making options even more limited – especially for those who rely on it.

Map out & try new public transit

If you’re like many people, you’ve become pretty dependent on your car and know very little about options for public transportation – whether traveling within town or to another destination. Take time to study the maps below so you know how to use public transportation more often.

Start exploring a bit and see how you can personally begin to integrate these transit methods into your life. In addition, when you venture a little further out, try the public transit available throughout the entire Bay Area.

Make an adventure out of it and take a group field trip across town just to try it out for fun.

Use buses

At the Petaluma Transit website, you can learn about schedules, fares, and passes. If your kids use city buses to get to school, you can also check to see which routes will work best for them. (Plus, it is FREE for students!) And Petaluma Paratransit provides pre-scheduled bus transportation for those with disabilities who can’t independently use a regular bus.

Use the SMART train

Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) is a great way to get around our two counties – you can read a book or enjoy the view while someone else does the driving! Currently, there are six SMART stations in Marin County and six in Sonoma County (with four more planned). And remember: taking a train instead of a car for medium-length distances cuts emissions by about 80 percent!
