Update kitchen appliances

Why?

Consumer Reports is seeing a trend toward greener choices: In a January 2022 nationally representative CR survey, 90 percent of Americans said individuals are at least somewhat responsible for protecting the planet; 72 percent said they sometimes, often, or always avoid purchasing products that are environmentally harmful; and one out of two Americans said they consider the environmental impact when buying products for their homes.

It may take a little time to adjust to changes and make the transition, but chances are good you’ll love the outcome – cleaner, quicker, and healthier cooking!

As with other electrification plans, you may choose to start small with less expensive, easier-to-achieve changes in the kitchen. Or you may be a renter, and may be more limited in ways you can electrify. Either way, we have options for you!

Sonoma Clean Power's Advanced Energy Center is a great free resource - you can call for expert advice (707-708-0444), stop into their showroom for a tour of their equipment displays (741 4th Street Santa Rosa, CA, 95404), find relevant rebates and qualified contractors on their website, and learn more about electrification on their education hub.

Switch to electric kettle

Not only are electric kettles more efficient than a stove or microwave, but they don’t produce the pollution of a gas stove and can put you one step closer to being less reliant on gas. Automatically turning off when done, these kettles are a great option for quickly boiling water for tea or coffee and other uses.

Switch to induction hotplate or cooktop

Whether you buy a standalone induction hotplate or an induction cooktop, let us induct you into a new way of cooking! Different from traditional hotplates or cooktops, induction uses an electromagnetic pulse to generate heat – heating quickly but keeping heating surfaces relatively cool, reducing burn risks. They don’t emit the harmful byproducts of gas stoves, which seriously contribute to indoor pollution and can cause respiratory and other health problems.

Although you may need to change some or all of your cookware to respond to this method of heating, rebates are available for some large electric appliances, making them more affordable.

Switch to electric oven

As you know, gas ovens use propane or natural gas (methane) as their fuel source, while electric ovens use…. you guessed it, electricity! When it’s time to replace your gas oven, switching to electric will help lower your carbon emissions and comes with other benefits as well.
