Find EV Chargers

Find EV Chargers

Why?

Locating an EV charger used to feel a little like going on a wild goose chase. There’s still lots of room for improvement, but now there are more than 100,000 charging stations across the country. No doubt, it will still ease anxiety to know where to easily find them.

Locate convenient charging stations

Whether you’re driving in town or taking a long road trip, scope out charging stations before you depart. Google maps is a great resource for finding charging stations in Petaluma or throughout the country. Google maps also provides eco-friendly and energy-efficient route planning and shows EV fast-charging options with 50kW or higher chargers.

You can also use an app to find convenient charging stations. In addition to the Google Map app, there are special apps that focus on fast chargers, for example, or can help you find hotels with charging stations.

Install a charger (bldg owner)

There are three main types of EV chargers:

  • Level 1 chargers don’t require special installation. Best for plug-in hybrids or short commutes, they come with your car and plug right into a standard 120 volt grounded wall outlet.

  • Level 2 chargers are four times faster at charging because they use 240 volts of electricity. They’re best for people with a longer commute or a battery EV, which requires longer charging times. Installation involves running 240 volts from the breaker panel to your charging location. What’s required is fairly technical and risky, requiring permits and inspections, so it’s best to hire a professional. Look for incentives here

  • Level 3 chargers, also called DC Fast Chargers, are mainly used in commercial and industrial settings and not available for home installation.

Share your charger

EV match is a nationwide network for sharing and renting private EV charging stations. Think Uber or Airbnb, but for chargers instead. You can support your community and earn some money by sharing your home charger. Also, if you park on the street or rent an apartment, this might be a helpful solution. (More charging options for renters may be on the way.)  With the EVmatch app, you can locate and reserve a time to use a charger, paying for the electricity used.
