Cool Petaluma, ReLeaf Petaluma, and the City of Petaluma have teamed up to give you FREE TREES!

Did you hear how Petaluma got $1 million from the Inflation Reduction Act and the USDA Forest Service, Urban and Community Forestry Program? This tree-planting initiative is part of the Petaluma Canopy Project, a collaborative partnership between the city and local nonprofits including ReLeaf Petaluma, Cool Petaluma, Daily Acts, Rebuilding Together Petaluma, and Point Blue Conservation to expand our tree canopy over the next three years.

Cool Petaluma is excited to be a part of this new residential tree planting opportunity coming this fall to help cool our homes and neighborhoods!

We plant, you water. Trained ReLeaf volunteers will plant the tree(s) and offer care consultations for up to 3 years!

FAQs:

  • Can I have more than one tree? Yes, you can have more than one! A lush urban canopy is the goal, so multiple trees in one location is encouraged.

  • Which tree species are available? There are dozens to choose from! Check out these two lists: Big Trees or Small Trees. A ReLeaf tree expert will help you make the best decision during your free 20 minute onsite consultation.

  • Where can I plant my trees? Trees can go anywhere that is suitable on your lot - front, back, and side yards included. They can even be planted in the sidewalk strip! But you’ll need to take care of any concrete removal on your own before hand.

  • Do I have to be a Petaluma resident? Yes, for this project you do need to be inside the city limits of Petaluma. If you are a renter, you do need the permission of the homeowner.

Starting September 5, 2024

When you are ready to claim your tree(s), register for a FREE 20 minute onsite consultation with a ReLeaf Petaluma tree expert to choose the tree(s) that works best in your location.

Your tree selections(s) and location(s) will be recorded.

You will be given a Tree Agreement Request form to sign and return to ReLeaf Petaluma.

AND THEN THE PLANTING!
Get your tree(s) in the ground

Late October through Late December, 2024

Once trees have been selected and the agreement has been signed, a ReLeaf volunteer will notify you of your planting date.

Help with the planting, if you are able, or take advantage of the experienced ReLeaf volunteers who will be participating on planting day.

Please note:

At planting time, ReLeaf can dig holes, provide wire cages, install stakes, and finish with mulch, but they cannot remove sidewalk concrete for you.

Residents have to provide ongoing care and water for the tree(s), but ReLeaf volunteers can answer questions and will even help with pruning in year two!
